With support from the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association, the South Suburban Economic Growth Initiative launched a Housing & Neighborhoods Working Group last June to help re-establish the Southland as an economic powerhouse. A follow-up was held on May 30 for a discussion about priorities and how they can support partners in the Southland.

Dozens of community leaders, bankers, planners and others met in East Hazel Crest Thursday afternoon to discuss their work to address the situation. The Housing & Neighborhoods Working Group is part of a broader effort known as the South Suburban Economic Growth Initiative.
“When (Cook County Board President) Toni Preckwinkle was reelected (in 2014), she said we needed a strategy for the south suburbs,” Jay Readey, SSEGI project manager, said.
The SSEGI released a 134-page report in 2017 that examined economic challenges facing 34 communities in the Southland. Read more.
