Video gambling machines are off to a roaring start in Illinois, producing about $106m during the first six months of this year and raising more revenue than nine of the state’s ten riverboat casinos in July.
With the first anniversary of the operation of video gambling machines [2] in Illinois arriving in October, there appears to be no end in sight to monthly revenue increases. Another 2,000 applications from bars, truck stops and other establishments for video gambling licenses are pending in addition to the 1,863 licenses already granted by the Illinois Gaming Board. The list would continue to grow if legislation, Senate Bill 2371, is signed by Governor Pat Quinn allowing social clubs to be eligible for licenses.
Part of a 2009 public works package, Illinois’ Video Gaming Act allows the activity only in Illinois communities that decide to permit it.
