The South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association approved the organization’s 2017-18 slate of officers, naming Hazel Crest Mayor Vernard Alsberry Jr. to lead as president. His term begins in June, and runs through May 2018. The election took place at SSMMA’s May 18 dinner meeting, held at the Calumet Country Club in Homewood. We are grateful to Hazel Crest for hosting it, and Comcast for sponsoring it.
Alsberry recognized outgoing President John Ostenburg (mayor of Park Forest) with a plaque for his dedicated service. In turn, Mayor Ostenburg presented a certificate of appreciation to outgoing mayors who had served on the board including Lansing Mayor Norman Abbott, Matteson Mayor Andre Ashmore, Monee Mayor Jay Farquhar and Olympia Fields Mayor Debbie Meyers Martin.
Ostenburg then welcomed new mayors to the association. These members include Alsip Mayor John Ryan, Dixmoor Mayor Yvonne Davis, Ford Heights Mayor Annie Coulter, Lansing Mayor Patricia Eidam, Markham Mayor Ernest Blevins, Matteson Mayor Sheila Chalmers-Currin, Midlothian Mayor Gary L’Heureux, Monee Mayor James Popp, Olympia Fields Mayor Sterling Burke, Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau, Posen Mayor Frank Podbielniak, Sauk Village Mayor Derrick Burgess and Tinley Park Mayor Jacob Vandenburg.
SSMMA’s full slate of officers for the 2017-2018 year includes: Vice President-Robbins Mayor Tyrone Ward, Secretary-Thornton Mayor Bob Kolash, Treasurer-Glenwood Mayor Ron Gardiner, Cook County at Large-Crestwood Mayor Lou Presta, Cook County at Large-Lynwood Mayor Gene Williams, and Will County at Large-Beecher Mayor Greg Szymanski.
