In 2016, Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT), in partnership with Cook County, IL and the US Army Corps of Engineers, conducted a resident-driven community flooding assessment in Riverdale, IL. This included community outreach and education; assessment of flooding damage; and identification of potential solutions and their efficacy.
This process identified Pekny Park, an 8.5-acre public park with minimal drainage and prone to flooding, as a target for green infrastructure implementation. The park is adjacent to the vital Ivanhoe Metra community train station. Riverdale is identified by Cook County as the area “most impacted and distressed” by the April 2013 flooding disaster (DR-4116).
This proposal will work in partnership with Center for Neighborhood Technology, the Riverdale Park District (RPD), Cook County, Terra Engineering Ltd (hereafter, Terra), and a selected landscape or construction firm to complete installation services of the green infrastructure.
Post-grant maintenance will be driven by RPD, utilizing RPD staff and/or community volunteers, who will gain this capacity through consult with a workforce development provider for green infrastructure installation and maintenance. In 2019, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation awarded these partners a grant to execute this project
