Employment opportunity: Steger Chief of Police


DESCRIPTION: The Village of Steger, IL (9,557), a non-home rule community located in Cook/Will Counties, Illinois, approximately 30 miles south of Chicago, seeks an experienced law enforcement executive to serve as its Chief of Police.

The Police Department has a compliment of 15 full time sworn officers, consisting of a Chief, a Deputy Chief, 3 Sergeants and 10 Police Officers and 6 part time sworn officers. The Department also is presently staffed by 1 full time and 1 part time records clerk. The Department is dispatched by a consolidated dispatch center. In 2014, the Department responded to approximately 13,000 calls for service. The General Fund Budget for Fiscal Year 2015-16 includes $1.95 million for Police.

REQUIREMENTS: A candidate for the position of Chief of Police must be a proven leader, committed to the development of the Department. The candidate will be an exceptional communicator, able to thoughtfully represent the interests of the Department and the Village, with a high level of community engagement. The Steger Police Department has a strong commitment to providing exceptional law enforcement services in conjunction with the needs of the community. The Village of Steger Chief of Police is appointed by the Mayor with the concurrence of the Village Board and reports to the Village Administrator.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in a related field with advanced certifications preferred. Candidates with an associate’s degree may be considered when accompanied with additional qualifications such as Illinois Certified Police Chief, Executive Management certificates including the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University Center for Public Safety or other similar State and/or National programs. Candidates must have at least 10 years of increasingly responsible supervisory experience in a law enforcement agency. The successful candidate will be a highly collaborative, experienced executive with a proven track record in a union environment and the ability to work and communicate with elected and appointed officials. STARTING SALARY: $92,000- $107,000 DOQ.
