The new Dixie Highway Commemorative Sign in Beecher was dedicated recently during a ribbon cutting ceremony, honoring the Centennial of Dixie Highway. Area residents, all of whom have been involved with the recognition of Dixie Highway, participated in the event.
Dixie Highway has been a main corridor from Miami to Chicago for the past 100 years. As a developing village, Beecher was fortunate that it was founded in 1870 along the future highway, an original Indian foot path running from Vincennes, Indiana to Chicago. It was later known as the Hubbard Trail in recognition of Gurdon Hubbard, an early trader with the Indians.
