Burnham Greenway trail held up by railroad dispute

A strip of sidewalk in south suburban Burnham has become the focus of a nearly four-year legal battle that is delaying the completion of a key regional bike trail.

Also at stake is about $5 million in federal and state funds.

A sidewalk on the northern border of Burnham just south of Chicago’s Hegewisch neighborhood could be converted into a wider path and fill in a gap on the Burnham Greenway — a bike and pedestrian path that slices through the southeast side of Chicago and neighboring suburbs. The Greenway could eventually become part of an even larger bike trail beltway in Northern Illinois, connecting to paths stretching east to Indiana, north along the lake to Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood and west to the Mississippi River…Please click here to read Mary Wisniewski’s story in the Tribune.
