A Burnham-scale boost for the Southland: A third airport in Peotone


City leaders are constantly reminding residents to “make no little plans,” except when it comes to predominantly black communities.

After another Memorial Day weekend that mirrors the same degree of violence as the last two, Chicago’s newest mayor said, “A lot of what we’re seeing out there are crimes of poverty.” Mayor Lori Lightfoot went on to explain the need to invest heavily in South and West side neighborhoods suffering from “systemic disinvestment” that has dragged on for decades.

Even though the mayors have changed over the last 30 years, the commitment to repopulate Chicago’s North Side while depopulating the South and West sides remains the same. To offset the tide of black residents leaving the city, we must “make big plans; aim high in hope and work.”

That’s exactly what the South Suburban Airport promises. Chicago and Illinois are the transportation hubs of the nation. Yet, we are the only major metropolitan city with two airports…Please click here to read Delmarie Cobb’s opinion piece in Crain’s.
