Tax-free zones may be an answer for the Southland

Mayor Rahm Emanuel this week called for the development of tax-free zones to attract business development in impoverished areas of Chicago, but the concept might be better applied to Cook County’s south suburbs.

Ford Heights (34.9 percent), Park Forest (32.1 percent) and Chicago Heights (29.9 percent) have the highest property tax rates in Cook County, according to figures compiled by county Clerk David Orr.

In comparison, Chicago had the lowest property tax rate at 6.8 percent, according to figures for 2013, which were released by Orr’s office last June…Please click here to read Phil Kadner’s column in the Tribune/Daily Southtown.
