“We all need to stand together and fight for the health of our region,” Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz-Qualkinbush told the group at the Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation’s Spring Quarterly Forum on April 27.
Calumet City hosted the event in an area where food distribution facilities and other businesses have replaced adult-entertainment clubs and taverns that populated a “sin strip” along State Street just west of the Indiana state line until the 1990s.
“There was the Top Hat Club, the Whiskey a Go-Go, the Zig Zag Club,” Markiewicz-Qualkinbush said.
Today, the area is populated by such businesses as Doreen’s Gourmet Frozen Pizza, Meats by Linz, Bob’s Body Shop and Alta Equipment, a construction-equipment dealer…Please click here to read Ted Slowik’s column in the Tribune/Daily Southtown.
