Southland communities mark Dixie Highway’s 100th birthday

The Dixie Highway — known in some parts as Route 1, Western Avenue, and Chicago Road — is a 5,786 mile stretch of paved roads connecting the upper Midwest to Southern Florida.

Divided into two branches, the Western route begins in Chicago and careens 136 miles south until it turns east in Danville and crosses over into Indiana.
