Press release from South Suburban College; please share with public works directors and staff:

WINTER PREPAREDNESS SNOW AND ICE CONFERENCE COMING TO OAK FOREST

South Suburban College is presenting a Winter Preparedness Snow and Ice Conference designed for Public Works directors, supervisors and operators on October 26 and 27, 2015. The conference will be offered in four sessions at SSC’s Oak Forest Center and featuring award winning presenters Chris Walsh, Director of Operations of Beloit Public Works, and Mark DeVries, Application Expert of Vaisala, Inc. and the former Maintenance Superintendant of McHenry County DOT. The cost of the conference is just $28 per person.

Sessions for Operators: The Basics of Snow & Ice Monday, October 26th from 8:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and again on Tuesday, October 27th from 7:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and from 12 noon – 3:30 p.m. Every winter season needs to start out with the basics of preparing for winter operations. Monday morning and both sessions on Tuesday are identical, focusing on the operator and covering ice basics such as the why and how of winter, the empowered operator, and safe, efficient, effective winter operations.

Session for Directors and Supervisors: Workplace Leadership Monday, October 26th from 12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Focusing on winter operations, this session will discuss preparation, policies and procedures, fostering excellence through staff development (including issues such as succession planning, dealing with generational differences), training including “the dirty dozen,” doing more with less, new trends, and a preview/input for the Tuesday operator sessions.

All sessions will promote sustainability including effective snow and ice control with reduced environmental impacts that balance winter operations and the environment, equipment use, alternative chemicals, and the concept of doing more with less.

For more information, please call Nancy Burrows at (708) 596-2000, ext. 3258 or email NBurrows@ssc.edu. The Oak Forest Center is located at 16333 S. Kilbourn, Oak Forest, Illinois.
