Press release from the Illinois Department of Transportation; please share with your public safety staff and communities:
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that lane closures will take place on Halsted Street between 187th Street and 183rd Street, in Glenwood, beginning, weather permitting, Monday, April 11. The closures are necessary to make improvements to the intersections and install sidewalk on Halsted Street.
The scope of the project includes widening and resurfacing 187th Street east of Halsted Street and constructing a right turn lane from westbound 187th Street to northbound Halsted Street. New sidewalk will be installed along Halsted Street and new traffic signals will be installed at the intersection of Halsted Street at 187th Street.
In order to complete the work, daily lane closures will take place on Halsted Street between 187th Street and 183rd Street. Occasional closures will take place on 187th Street and 183rd Street. Access to businesses along Halsted Street will remain open.
The overall improvements will reduce congestion and improve pedestrian safety. The project is scheduled to be complete in Fall 2016.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
