City of Chicago Heights Position Description
POSITION TITLE: Serviceman DEPARTMENT: Public Works/Water Department CATEGORY: Serviceman/Skilled Craft REPORTS TO: Operations Supervisor / Water Department Superintendent / Public Works Director FLSA STATUS : Non-exempt ——————————————————————————————————————- POSITION SUMMARY: Under general supervision, this position is responsible for performing varied maintenance and construction duties relative to the City potable water systems. Work performed is of routine difficulty and is reviewed for progress and conformance to established standards by the Director of Public Works and Water Superintendent. Under certain conditions, this position may be required to perform duties of maintenance personnel in other classifications, and may be required to act as a team leader for other personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs semi-skilled maintenance and construction tasks relative to the City potable water system including, but not limited to: • Installs and repairs water mains, fire hydrants, customer services and structures • Locates, marks, operates, raises and lowers b-boxes, valve boxes, water structures • Excavates and repairs broken water mains and services • Reads, installs, resets and repairs water meters • Assists other employees in water plant operations • Inspects valve vaults and boxes • Operates light and heavy duty motor vehicle equipment and tools including tractor loader and tractor backhoe operation, pick up and dump trucks, and jackhammer • Loads, unloads and hauls materials • Clears work sites of debris • Snow removal and salting roadway as required • Routine equipment maintenance • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor within the scope of position description Receives and responds to: • Work orders, requisitions parts, equipment, materials and supplies as required and customer inquiries and complaints • Picks up, transports and delivers goods and equipment • Prepares required forms and time audits • Performs weekend and call-out duties as assigned • Advises customers of City policies • Performs other duties as assigned or as may be required
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Supervision from Crew Leader, Foreman, Operations Supervisor, Water Supt., Director of Public Works
MANAGERIAL/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: At times may be required to direct seasonal employees
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Education: Requires high school diploma or GED Certificate Residency: Must establish residency within the corporate limits of the City of Chicago Heights within one year from the date of hire Experience:
Three (3) years previous maintenance, construction or utility water and waste water experience preferred
Skill in the use of hand tools and in the operation of gasoline and electric powered construction tools and equipment
Knowledge in the operation and repair of pumps and related pump station equipment
Ability to perform basic repairs and maintenance to gasoline powered and electric powered construction equipment
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, understand and follow verbal and written instruction, learn and follow departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations and make decisions in accordance with established policies
Ability to work within time constraints and to maintain tact and composure in stressful situations
Ability to prepare routine reports and to make accurate arithmetic computations
Ability to read, write legibly, speak and understand business English
Some knowledge of the installation, operation and repair of water meters, utility and drainage construction and maintenance techniques is preferred
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Possession of a Class B CDL Illinois driver’s license with air brake endorsement
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to perform manual tasks requiring physical strength and endurance
Ability to climb ladders
Ability to lift and carry tools and materials to perform work assignments
Ability to wear and work in a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
Ability to move and maneuver 150-pound chlorine cylinders
Ability to bend and twist to perform tasks in tight and/or cramped work places
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Ability to perform duties in adverse working conditions
Ability to perform duties in confined spaces
Ability to perform duties in excavations
