The Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership, Business and Career Services, Inc., OAI, Inc. and  South Suburban College hosted a Calumet Manufacturing Careers Internship Program recognition event at Prairie State College on Dec. 11, 2014. SSMMA and CSEDC helps support this coalition and program participants with employer engagement and grant support to connect unemployed or underemployed young adults with sustainable jobs with  local manufacturers.

The Calumet Manufacturing Careers Internship Program enables Workforce Investment Act (WIA)-eligible youth ages 18 to 21 an opportunity to explore meaningful and productive careers in manufacturing. Simultaneously, the program addresses the critical shortage of qualified workers in the manufacturing sector. The CMCIP has been very successful in its placement of youth in employment and post-secondary education opportunities.

Developed by Business and Career Services in partnership with Medusa Consulting Group. The CMCIP is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) through the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership.

This turn-key program is driven by the needs of the manufacturers to find and train skilled workers. It starts with a three-week “Manufacturing Boot Camp” and ends with an eight-week paid internship at a local manufacturing company. It provides the mentoring, guidance, skills training and hands-on work experience needed to help youth transition to a rewarding career in manufacturing or pursue additional post-secondary education and training.

The Calumet Manufacturing Careers Internship Program is a program of the Calumet Green Manufacturing Partnership. This initiative has been underway in the South Chicago/ South Cook County region, also known as the “Calumet,” since 2012. The goal is to enhance the manufacturing industry in the Calumet region by addressing the labor/ skills mismatch and promoting careers in manufacturing to ensure a competitive workforce, which is a key asset for regional economic development. Objectives include increasing employer investment in the Calumet regional workforce; meeting manufacturers’ labor needs by aligning the consultative services, preparatory services and training resources available to businesses as well as unemployed, dislocated and incumbent workers; and promoting careers in manufacturing.
