IDOT has released their FY 2016-2021 Proposed Highway Improvement Program.  In Fiscal Year 2016, IDOT plans to spend $1.850 billion on transportation improvements. The proposed program totals $8.385 billion over 5 years. While these seem like large numbers, actual spending is down $200 million from the FY 2015-2020 program and $1.1 billion from the FY 2014-2019 program. Additionally, the vast majority (44%) of these funds will be spent on system maintenance, with 29% to be spent on bridge maintenance, 19% on congestion mitigation and only 8% on system expansion.
